About John
John Terry Sawyer is an amateur painter and photographer in Washington, DC. Through his art, John attempts to capture the mundane and the sublime: the everyday object, emotion, or activity in the context of a greater landscape of meaning. Mostly, though, John enjoys being outdoors and with friends and snapping a quiet photo. He’s also taken up painting, and has been learning and loving the meditative process of translating an image to canvas.

John grew up near Cleveland and went to school in Michigan. He has lived in DC for about 6 years, most recently near the historic U Street corridor, though his heart will always remain in Mount Pleasant (and at the Raven, DC’s finest watering hole). His day job is advocating for more access to health care for low-income families. An ambitious home cook, he makes a mean frittata and recently roasted a duck for the first time. His list of things he’d like to learn includes salsa dancing and gardening.

John wishes to thank Hannah, his fabulous and beautiful girlfriend, Dana, his patient and supportive painting teacher, and Ed, his generous and talented webmaster.
